Water colour from the Collection Amor Fati
“In English we talk about the fabric of life, or the tapestry of life. Or even just leaving your mark on something. The art of weaving made me think of African cultures whose colorful prints tell a story. Literally (visual) text on a textile. Then I thought, ‘What do we have here in Holland in terms of a textile telling a story? Funnily enough, because I’m not a racing fan, but I thought of Max Verstappen and the black and white checkered flag… Or is it a chess board? A giant question mark asks you, What does your story look like? What colors, shapes or symbols would you use?’ The suggestion of a domino in the bottom right corner is my idea of making a game of it all.”,
a reflection from artist Greg Suffanti.
This remarkable aquarel with a story has been made especially for the book of Heidi Muijen about the Quest for Wisdom vision around the board game for global citizenship: Amor Fati, spelende wijsheid voor de kosmopolis.
On page 153, the painting illustrates the kinship of textual patterns – as a form of philosophical tools – with (inter)cultural forms, such as rituals and the art of storytelling. Here, a classical zeitgeist focuses on cultivating the natural goodness in human beings, which is passed on inter-generationally with education and good habits in families, rituals in clans and small communities. With a view to world citizenship, the art of living requires opening the doors of collectives to “the foreign other” – so that human love does not stop at the border of one’s own group!
